The area is not too far away from Marrakesh (about 1:30 min drive) , but absolutely quiet. It's the best when you've had enough of the city. Othman, our host, gave us a very warm welcome and tried the whole time to make our stay as pleasant as possible. He is very helpful, communicative and always friendly. He and his wife provided us with wonderful food (tajine) and a good breakfast. Our children also enjoyed the time and especially the campfire in the evening. The house is very simple but absolutely original, and the climbing area is simply brilliant. Super grippy rock and lots of routes of all possible levels of difficulty. The morning sun is absolutly stunning! We can recommend Morocco Climbing Expeditions to absolutely everyone. It was a fantastic time! Many thanks to Othman, his wife and also his father. Otmane is a very experienced climber and well connected in the local climbing community. We enjoyed rock climbing and hanging out with him. The weekend in Gagou was perfectly organised and the hospitality was great. I was visiting Marrakech and looking for a climbing excursion nearby for the weekend and luckily met Othmane with Morocco Climbing Expeditions. We went climbing outside, at a place called Gagou, his knowledge and expertise was legendary. He was able to set routes and guide technically as well as provide clear learning instructions. We top roped, lead climbed and he organized a group for climbing with varying abilities. He also made an amazing Tagine for us to eat after a long day climbing. This is my second time visiting Marrakesh so wanted to do some outdoor activities rather than sightseeing. I climbed at Atlas Elevation gym, which I really liked, and asked them if they could take me outdoor climbing as a solo climber. They gave me the contact info of Otman, who took me to his hometown, Gagou. I was the only person climbing there, which was fantastic. I would not have wanted to go anywhere else, where I would be next to so many tourists. Instead, in Gagou, it was quiet and peaceful. Otman's wife also made me home-made tajine, and Otman's brother took pictures of me climbing. I am an intermediate climber and have 3 years of experience outdoor climbing in New York, so I can't describe how Otman's instructions might have been, since he didn't have to teach me anything, but he's a great climber himself and showed me the map of the area so that I could choose whatever route I wanted. When I travelled to Morocco from the U.K. I knew I wanted to do some climbing, but I was still pretty new to it and didn't feel equipped to figure it out on my own. I had a hard time finding a guide but eventually found Otmane, who when I met him was working at the climbing gym in Marrakesh, and I'm so glad I did. We drove out to Gagou (I've seen it called Zuhelika in some places), and while at first I was a little disappointed not to be climbing in the Atlas mountains, it turned out to be the perfect place. It was away from the tourist groups trekking through worn trails, out in a place known by savvy French climbers and locals, and for good reason. The rock is beautiful, rising from the desert in a valley fringed with palm trees, littered with boulders and cut through with a washout/stream bed. There are climbs ranging from very low grades that serve as wonderful introductions to the sport, fun challenges for regular gym climbs, and worthy projects for seasoned climbers. But honestly, I think the thing that really made the experience special was Otmane. The crag Gagou is literally his backyard. He grew just nearby and got his introduction to rock climbing in part in the valley. So climbing there with Otmane is climbing with the person who knows it best, and who cares for the place in a way few others can. Plus, he's a great climbing buddy and a fun guy to spend a day with!
